Andrew and Karla's Place

Find out what has been happening with us

Having a bad hamburger for lunch

Just grabbed a hamburger for lunch form one of the local shops as I was tired of having rice for most of my lunches. I haven’t eaten at this place before but there is generally a lot of people getting food there.

Well I know better now, there hamburger was not the cheapest and the bun was dry and hard, there was some sort of meat paddy on it and a sorry piece of some what brown lettuce and two bits of tomatoe. It was dry and horrible, if it wasn’t winter and I could be bothered I would have taken it back.

There is an older shop which is closer and for about 2/3rds the price, the other week I got a burger from them and this one was hard to fault it was full, the bun was nice and fresh, just altogether better.

Still having problems with our internet at home

We are still having lots of drop outs with our internet, I am pretty sure that it’s the modem, we’ve had it for many years and it normally does not miss a beat. But over the past few weeks or so it has really been dropping out alot and having trouble resyncing.

I’ve picked up an old Cisco 857W of the forums, which should come today or tomorrow so hopefully such a work horse wont have any issues even if our line quality isn’t the best. Of course all of the disconnects stops our site from being available which is not acceptable, one of the problems of hosting yourself I guess.

Site down over the past day

If you do happen to drop by every now and then you would have noticed that yesterday the site was down for most of the day. It seems my modem and firewall decided to stop playing nicely together.

I’ve been using my modem to handle the PPP authentication with my ISP and have the modem in full bridging mode. I’ve found this the best solution as my modem doesn’t handle a lot of concurrent connections and eventually locks up. Now I’ve gone back to having the modem in normal mode but I guess it will lock up after a couple of days.

I might have to look at replacement, I don’t need one with lots of features as I will be using it in bridging mode like the last one so only $30 or $40 should cover it.

Must be Friday as the funny videos are making the rounds

Here’s a few funny videos that have been sent to me this morning.

Edit: Well ok there is obviously and issue with uploading videos with this release.

So sorry no funny video’s for you.

Enjoy

Joined Microsoft TechNet today

Found and offer that was to hard to resist especially with some tasty new releases coming out this year from MS. I know this seems a little contraditory to my last post about Windows7, but hey a bargain is a bargain.

TechNet is for IT professionals or anyone really to gain access to most all of MicroSofts current and beta software for evaluation purposes. The software is full version and not time limited. So now if I want to play around with (oops I mean learn) Windows Server 2008, or Exchange Server, Windows7. I can just download it from MS and install it.

The software is not meant to be used in a production environment if you want to do that then you need to purchase the software as per normal from them.

What it does mean I can install and test Windows7 Ultimate on my home test workstation, laptop etc., to see how it goes. I might need to test it for several years on those machines but that’s ok.

Should mean access to the new Windows Home Server V2 when it’s released this year as well. Might also look at setting up an Exchange Server to finally test getting our emails in sync across several machines.

Not to sure but I might be able to claim the subscription on tax as well seeming I am a developer and this will help with various work projects to.

Windows7 Release date confirmed

May not be exciting to everyone and I’m not so sure about myself seeming that I paid for the Ultimate version of Vista, which was suppose to have extra features and content provided by Microsoft which never actually appeared.

But anyway Windows7 will be released to the public on the 22nd of October 2009, pricing is also suppose to be more expensive than Vista and this hasn’t been released yet.

I’ve never had the issues with Vista that most people complain about and I am using the 64bit version, sure some drivers had to be waited for but on the whole Vista has been pretty good and better than XP. I’m not a huge gamer so a few less frames in games hasn’t been a problem.

I have played around with Windows7 and it does seem quicker and does use less memory so people with older machines will find it runs better than Vista. My own hardware is still fairly current, but is now one generation behind the latest hardware.

Will I be lining up to get a copy straight away I don’t think so, I’ve even taken the RC off my main machine as it will have to be blown away when the RTM version is ok and I can’t be bothered getting to comfortable with an install just to have to remove it.

I’ll see what the pricing is and what the upgrade costs before making the plunge, also I will need WAF before making the purchase as well. (Wife Approval Factor)

Now I just need to get in to the beta testing group for Windows Home Server Version 2.
